Music Stars Making Appearances at Local Businesses
March
30, 2006 -- Halifax, NS – Well-known musical artists
like Joel Plaskett and the Barenaked Ladies are making a scene
all over Halifax – posing in windows and resting on tables.
These artists have been adopted by restaurants, pubs, and retailers
around town as part of Halifax Play Hard’s Adopt-an-Artist
program.
With
the nation’s premiere music awards show broadcasting live
from Halifax this Sunday, the host committee for the 2006 JUNO
Awards has encouraged businesses to celebrate the stars by naming
menu items after musical artists and bands, and by decorating
their windows and storefronts around them.
A
variety of restaurants have jumped on board with everything from
a single item to entire menus. Fid on Dresden Row has adopted
Barenaked Ladies and is featuring a Million Dollar Macaroni. Five
Fishermen on Argyle is decked out with a glitzy Red Carpet menu,
and Atlantis Steak & Lobster on Salter Street offers multiple
items including Michael Bublé Bubblin Lobster Chowder,
Blue Rodeo Wrangled Filet Mignon, and Rex Goudie Grilled Ribs
& Fries. For dessert there’s always the Torpedo cookie
at Starr’s Dessert Café on Portland Street in honour
of Matt Mays and El Torpedo.
Retailers
have also adopted stars, with a Joel Plaskett mannequin playing
at Frozen Ocean on Barrington Street stopping shoppers in their
tracks. Sketches of Joel fill the windows at the Argyle Fine Art
Gallery in a display by artist Rebecca Kraatz. An incredible scene
from the Arcade Fire video at Frame Express on Barrington Street
is also turning heads.
"We're
pleased that local businesses have become so creative with this
promotion," said Andree Gracie, Halifax Play Hard Event Manager.
"Visitors and residents will have great fun spotting displays
and sampling foods that recognize our talented Canadian artists."
