TORONTO,
March 27, 2006 — Soulful R&B singing sensation
Jully Black is set to host and perform during
Canada’s most exclusive music industry event, the 2006 JUNO
Gala Dinner & Awards, as announced today by the Canadian Academy
of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).
On
Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the World Trade and Convention Centre
in Halifax, NS, nominees, industry executives, sponsors and CARAS
members will dine in style and celebrate Canada’s musical
achievements of the past year. This prestigious non-televised
event will also feature performances by 2006 JUNO Award nominees
Kardinal Offishall, Martha Wainwright and The Road Hammers.
A
Gala Reception sponsored by FACTOR for the music industry’s
elite will precede the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards. Winners
in 32 JUNO Awards categories will be announced at this event that
will also feature a special tribute to this year’s Walt
Grealis Special Achievement Award recipient, Bernie Finkelstein.
Whether
she’s singing her heart out on her astounding debut album
This Is Me, reporting from the red carpet for CTV’s eTalk
Daily, broadening her talents in the theatre production of Da
Kink In My Hair, adding Destiny's Child and Nas to her songwriting
credits or expanding her social consciousness in Bangladesh, there's
an apparent fearlessness to Jully Black that's
both admired and awarded. Her signature rasp and soul-stirring
voice combined with her songwriting talents make this 2006 JUNO
Award nominee for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year one of the
most respected artists in the Canadian music community.
2006
JUNO Award nominee for Rap Recording of the Year Kardinal
Offishall has been incorporating authentic Jamaican vibes
into his unique rap-dancehall mix since the mid-'90s. His latest
album, Fire And Glory, describes what his life has been like over
the last few years. The JUNO Award-winning artist has appeared
on BET and MTV in the US and guested on records by Pete Rock,
Method Man, Akon and others.
Part
ingénue, part punkster, strong and vulnerable all at once,
with a hugely expressive voice and an arsenal of powerful songs,
Martha Wainwright is a beguiling entertainer
and a refreshingly different, new force in music. Undoubtedly
her own person, with her own sense of style, this 2006 JUNO Award
nominee for New Artist of the Year (sponsored by FACTOR) creates
her music with an extraordinary versatile and compelling voice.
Country
Recording of the Year nominees The Road Hammers
combine a no-nonsense mix of country, southern rock and blues,
singing songs of maverick culture and the open road. Their debut
self-titled album features a mix of truckin’ classics and
new originals that explore universal themes of losin’, lovin’
and livin’. The album has achieved GOLD sales status in
Canada.
The
2006 JUNO Awards, Canada’s Music Awards, will
be broadcast in High-Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound on CTV
on Sunday, April 2 from the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, NS.
In April 2005, 1.34 million viewers watched The 2005 JUNO Awards
from Winnipeg on CTV. In all, more than 5.7 million Canadians
tuned in to watch some part of the star-studded show– an
